Minimise your risks
Risk and safety analysis are a very important tool for today's technologies but also for novel and innovative ship designs deviating from prescriptive requirements. GL therefore performs among others risk-based inspections, equivalency analyses, FMEA analysis, collision risk analysis or simulations of complex evacuation scenarios.
Risk Assessment and Analyses
For today's technologies risk and safety analysis are essential. Not only in the Process Technology methods like safety analysis including SIL definition, qualitative risk assessments methods (e.g. FMEA) and failure probability quantification are GL's daily business.
Equivalence Analysis
Novel and innovative ship designs, referred to as alternative designs and arrangements, may under certain conditions deviate from prescriptive requirements stipulated in SOLAS. Different IMO guidelines describe the steps required to demonstrate an equivalent level of safety usually involving a hazard identification study and a qualitative and quantitative risk analysis. GL performs equivalency analyses for all areas covered by MSC Circ. 1002 and MSC Circ. 1212 like fire safety, life-saving appliances and arrangements, machinery and electrical installations.
Safe return to port assessment
Passenger ships constructed on or after 1 July 2010 with three or more main vertical zones (MVZ) or a length of 120m or more have to fulfil the new SOLAS "Safe Return to Port" Regulations II-1/8-1, II-2/21 and II-2/22. For these ships the operation of essential systems according to MSC.1/Circ. 1214 in case of fire and flooding casualties has to be analysed and ensured. Similar investigations may be applicable to other ship types like HSC or navy vessels.

Safety and reliability assessment
In many industries, such as maritime and aviation, the risk concept has established itself as a means of assessing the level of safety provided by specific design solutions and operational procedures. The advantages of risk assessment in this context include an increased certainty regarding the system-inherent hazards combined with enhanced design flexibility. In a risk assessment a system or process is analysed with respect to the likelihood and consequences of incidents and accidents. The risk assessment process is performed by means of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Risk based inspection concept (RBI)
One systematic means of developing an optimised, cost-efficient inspection plan is risk-based inspection, or RBI. RBI brings benefits - particularly for older structures, pipelines and networks. Oil and gas pipelines for example are the world's main energy arteries. Such is their significance that reliability and integrity are essential. Operational risks such as downtime, leakage or safety hazards have to be kept as low as reasonably practicable. Please also see "GALIOM".
Evacuation analysis
Evacuation analyses are required for new Ro-Ro-passenger vessels under IMO MSC/Circular 1238 and recommended for other passenger vessels. GL offers fast and intuitive simulations of complex evacuation scenarios by using the software AENEAS. This includes passenger flows in emergency situations as well as boarding/disembarking scenarios.
Collision risk assessment
This service assesses the collision risk between ships and between ship and floating or fixed offshore structures and installations, e.g. platforms or wind farms as well as assessing selected risk control options, such as AIS, VTS and tugs. Consideration is given to both disabled (drifting) ships and ships under power.
RA for ISM
According to the newest revision of the ISM Code, which is in effect since July 1st 2010, all ships are required to conduct a risk assessment in order to identify all risks to the respective ship, its personnel and the environment and to establish appropriate safeguards. This service is adopted in its extent and scope to the clients needs ranging from a full risk assessment within the ISM-Code objectives to individual support on specific topics concerning risk assessment and management.
